The Chapel School’s Second Grade
Practices Pumpkin Problems

Counting, estimating, making arrays and discussing number properties were just a few ways The Chapel School second graders incorporated pumpkins into their Math lessons. They began the lesson by reading the book, How Many Seed in a Pumpkin? By: Margaret McNamara and G. Brian Karas.
The students then became Mathematicians meticulously counting the seeds, and reviewing odd and even numbers. “They really enjoyed being hands on,” stated Mrs. Hillier, second grade teacher at The Chapel School. “We had lots of “pumpkin math” fun!” This is a fun lesson that manages to keep the 2nd graders’ attention during an exciting time of the year. “Besides having fall fun, they learn lots of skills such as estimating, making informed guesses, and skip counting,” she added.
The Chapel School is located at 172 White Plains Road in Bronxville, New York. And. For more information about the Chapel School and its programs, please call 914-337-3202 or visit the website at www.thechapelschool.org
